What is PBIS?

PA PBS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, schoolwide framework designed to improve both academic and behavioral outcomes for all students. It focuses on creating a positive, predictable learning environment by explicitly teaching and reinforcing appropriate social behaviors while reducing the frequency and intensity of challenging behaviors. PBIS is effective across all grade levels and can be applied in both school and home settings to support consistent expectations.

At its core, PBIS emphasizes a shared, consistent approach to behavior. Schools implementing PBIS establish common language and practices for behavior management, ensuring that all staff and students understand expectations. These expectations are clearly defined and explicitly taught, helping students know what it means to be safe, kind, and responsible in different settings.

In addition, PBIS includes a structured system for recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior. By acknowledging students’ appropriate choices, schools encourage continued growth and help build a supportive, respectful school culture where all students can succeed.

Schools that consistently implement PBIS eliminate barriers to student learning and experience meaningful, measurable benefits. These include expanded quality instructional time, increased academic achievement, improved student attendance, and decreased student behavior referral rates. PBIS also promotes greater involvement and engagement among all stakeholders, including students, staff, and families, further strengthening the overall school community.
